Buildings, Better Business conference in Wisconsin Dells, on behalf of
Governor Doyle, Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton presented five businesses
with the 2007 Governors Awards for
their contributions to making homes in Wisconsin more energy and resource
efficient.
These companies are leaders
committed to high quality, energy-efficient, sustainable housing. They understand that how we house our
citizens is a key indicator of how we treat our world, that the right thing to
do can be the profitable thing as well, said Lieutenant Governor Lawton.
These companies
have made
Wisconsin a leader in the construction of
homes that are safe, comfortable, durable and affordable, said
Lieutenant Governor Lawton.
This is the fourth year that Governors Awards were presented at this conference. Winners were
selected based on the following criteria:
- Technical
excellence in residential construction and remodeling,
- Involvement,
dedication, and commitment to high performance construction,
- Continual
improvement of products and processes,
- Willingness
to provide leadership to the building construction industry through
activities that improve the quality of
Wisconsins labor force, and
- Effective
work with contractors, trade partners and allies that provide materials
and expertise and make it possible for Wisconsin building professionals to
produce better high-performance homes.

Balts Construction of the Chippewa Valley, Inc. (Balts
Construction) is owned and operated by Shannon and Kevin Balts, strong
supporters of Home Performance with ENERGY STAR and Wisconsin ENERGY STAR Homes. The company started out doing small remodeling
projects and it did not take long for their reputation of good quality and fair
prices to change all that. Customers
impressed with their knowledge of the work as well as their personal integrity
have helped the company grow in size and services in the last five years. Balts Construction is open to new ideas and
places a high priority on building performance testing to ensure the health and
safety for the occupants and to avoid liability problems. Balts Construction realizes the importance of
educating consumers on the benefits of building performance and the whole
building approach and they conduct an interactive weekly radio talk-show to
discuss home performance problems. Balts
Construction is a member of the Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association and
Kevin has served as chair of the Education Committee.
The Better Buildings: Better Business Conference took place
February 5 and 6 in Wisconsin Dells. The conference offers attendees more than 40
sessions and in-field tours on building science and improving business
practices and features a trade show. The conference is organized by the Energy
Center of Wisconsin and sponsors include the Wisconsin Division of Energy,
Focus on Energy, Alliant Energy, WE Energies, Xcel Energy, the Wisconsin Building
America Initiative and the Builders Journal. Over 700 attendees were at the
